BIENNIAL OF STAGE DESIGN

The Biennial of Stage Design, launched in 1996, is the most wide-ranging and significant event in Serbia and this part of Europe dedicated to art, design and technology in performing arts. For its innovative, interdisciplinary concept it is relevant in the much wider international framework, as noted by numerous Biennial guests from all over the world.

The Biennial was created with a purpose to promote, encourage, pursue, develop and advance creative and professional work in all areas concerned with design, technology, production, realization and promotion of stage events, especially those invisible crafts essential for the 'life' on stage. No exhibition before this Biennial had undertaken to promote such a wide range of professions. Tributes paid at the existing festivals had taken into account only a small part of professional efforts of artists and technicians who have a considerable impact on stage events. The Biennial was created from belief that these unfairly neglected aspects of performing arts should be placed under the spotlights and given proper public acclaim.

This festival of stage design and technology is a unique opportunity to present and critically evaluate the biennial stage production in our country in the five main categories (event design, applied stage arts, craftsmanship, performing space and promotion of performing events) and over 30 subcategories, which illustrate the complexity, variety and dynamic development of contemporary disciplines contributing to the production of stage events.

So far, several hundred creators of stage events have participated in the Biennial, and Biennial selection has included over 1400 works.
